Read the responsibilities first

Titles can cover different work. Start with what the person actually does: equipment work, cabling, troubleshooting, documentation or another area. Keep technical IT work distinct from facilities responsibilities such as power and cooling.

Make a short list of recurring tasks across the roles you want. This is more useful than choosing a course based on a job title alone.

Separate required from preferred

Employers may describe qualifications as required, preferred or equivalent experience. Keep those categories separate when checking your fit.

Look at the exact certification names and the kind of experience requested. Do not assume that one credential replaces every other requirement.

Check the practical details

Read the location, schedule and physical requirements carefully. Online training and the location of a future job are different questions.

  • Where is the role based, and can you get there?
  • Does it involve shifts, weekends or on-call work?
  • Are there travel or physical requirements?
  • Are any employer-specific background or eligibility requirements stated?

Turn the posting into a learning plan

Mark the tasks you can already explain, the ones you are learning and the ones you have not encountered. Bring that list to a coach or instructor.

Use current employer postings to update your plan as you learn. Requirements differ by role and can change, so keep checking the actual opportunities in your target location.
